Dear friends and extended community,
I’m Maranda, a dancer and choreographer based in Brooklyn, NY. I am raising money for the dance performance I am curating, inspired by dreams.
This is a topic that has always fascinated me -- the stories we dream are a window into a wide unconscious landscape that is unique to each of us. Working with dreams can lead us to meaningful symbols, new views of ourselves, or questions we wouldn’t have thought to ask. Dreams also illuminate the barrier between what we experience and what we can give or show to another person -- an especially potent idea right now, when most of us are immersed in our own bubbles, trying to share our experiences through limited channels. I have wanted to explore dreams through movement for many years -- and now it is happening!
This show is being presented as part of the Curatorial Fellowship in Dance organized by SMUSH Gallery, a beloved hub for the arts in Jersey City.
It will feature the work of five dance artists:
Kareem Woods (@andrekwoods)
Alaina Wilson (@alainawilsondance)
Tushrik Fredericks (@tushrik)
Rosy Gentle (@rosypique)
Jes Wittig (@jestural)
Maranda Barry (@marb_dance -- that's me)
In addition we have Emma King, a multimedia visual artist (@wellness_season), and musician Annie Murnighan (@anniecantdrive) who are working with the choreographers to bring their dream-inspired works fully to life.
Due to the COVID-19 winter surge, we have had to pivot to a virtual format for this event to ensure that everyone remains safe. We’re grateful to be able to do this, but virtual shows come with complications -- such as the need to reimagine each piece for a camera, find a streaming platform that can do justice to the work, and recruit an audience online.
Our goal is to raise $2,000 to cover the costs of producing this work by the opening show date, February 19th.
Here’s how the funds will be used:
-Paying the contributing dance artists for their rehearsal and performance time
-Paying the visual and musical artists collaborating with the dancers, Emma and Annie, for their work and studio time
-Covering the cost of space rentals, which are necessary for dancers to rehearse and build their work
-Covering the cost of video recording and live-streaming services so that this work can be shared safely
I believe that art is what keeps us connected to each other and our deeper selves, especially during times of upheaval and change. 2020 has certainly dealt us plenty of challenges. Performing artists in particular have been deeply affected by loss of work and closures of dance studios. Many of us are unemployed, or working for less than pre-pandemic.
And -- for dancers especially -- it is unfortunately common, even in ordinary times, to be paid nothing for putting in a huge effort to create and present their work.
By contributing to this fundraiser, you are helping to build a culture where art is valued. You are supporting these artists and helping our creative communities become more resilient -- after all, being able to break even at the end of the day is the only thing that allows us to keep going and make these productions sustainable! You are also investing in art that builds a bridge between different disciplines, that prioritizes collaboration, and takes risks.
During this exceptionally tough year, your support would mean a lot to us.
How much can I/should I give?
A donation of $1-$50 = an abundance of gratitude and appreciation, and my personal good vibes sent your way on an evening breeze
A donation of $50-$100 = a handwritten thank you letter
A donation of $100 or more = I will frame a portrait of you and place it on my wall. Haha, just kidding. You will actually have free access to the virtual event & recording, as well as each of the above prizes!
Every single contribution helps to bring this show to life.
Thank you so very much, keep on dreaming as only you can do, and we’ll see you at the show.
