Fundraiser for Carly Overton-Apt fire total loss

My phone rang at 3am PST. It was Carly. “My apartment is on fire.” We switch over to FaceTime and I couldn’t believe the enormity of the fire. Flames shooting into the sky from the top of the building. 2 alarm fire. About 8 fire trucks including 2 ladder trucks. No building fire alarms going off, only neighbors frantically knocking on doors to get everyone out.
She grabbed her laptop, charger, medication, flip flops and of course her dog, Bentley. She sat on the lawn across the street with all the other building tenants in their pajamas watching the fire burn while the firefighters extinguished the fire. 3 hours later, after the fire was extinguished, she was allowed to go back into the building for a short amount of time to grab whatever else might be salvageable. There was 3 inches of water on the floor. The bathroom ceiling had caved and there was soot all over. Water dripping from the ceiling fixtures & vents, wall paint was bubbling, debris strewn throughout the apartment. Everything was soaking wet. She grabbed some clothes, her desktop computer and her Sonicare. Her clothes were soaked and smelled of smoke. She washed one load of clothes 4 times and still, the smoke smell remains. She isn’t allowed to go back into the building because of possible structure failure. She is technically homeless but thanks to her lifelong friend, Danielle Knoepfler Puri, she has a short-term place to live. Luckily, I have the good fortune to fly to SLC to be with her. We’ve been to Old Navy to get a few pieces of clothing and Target to get the necessities. She is starting to realize how costly this unfortunate event will be. She needs money to lease another apartment, replace so many things and get her life back on track. 18 apartments total in her building, 12 damaged and 5 deemed a total loss, hers being one of the 5.
