Fundraiser for Bronx Freedom Fund
Tax deductible
To all the kind, generous souls in my life:
Before I go on, I want to acknowledge that not everybody can afford a big donation. However, no donation is too small. If things are tight, $10 is enough to show your support for me and help reach the fundraising goal of $6,000.
The Bronx Freedom Fund is a nonprofit that helps pay bail for people who are being held in jail while awaiting trial for petty and misdemeanor crimes, simply because their families cannot afford bail (often as low as $250). People are forever changed by their traumatic experiences in jail, and the Bronx courts are especially clogged. I have worked in the Bronx on and off for many years, and am currently in my 3rd year as a general practitioner at Callen Lorde Community Health Center. We focus on serving the LGBT population of the Bronx. My patients are routinely discriminated against because of their gender identity, sexual orientation, HIV status, mental illness, age, nationality, and race. They are frequently arrested and held for the pettiest of "crimes" like jumping the subway turnstile or carrying a swiss army knife. I know I would not get arrested for such things.
This issue is very important to me, and you have so many options to support me!
1) You can join me and my friend Jill at our fundraising party at Tradesman Bar in Brooklyn (222 Bushwick Ave) from 7 to 10 pm on Saturday August 25th. A share of proceeds from food and drink sales will be donated, and we will have a collection box for cash donations.
2) You can donate money! Donations are tax deductible, and you will receive a receipt to submit with your 2018 taxes.
3) You can forward the email and/or share our Fundraiser page on Facebook.
Thank you so much for reading this! And if you haven't watched Time: The Khalief Browder Story yet, please do. It's a powerful illustration of how truly broken our system is.
