My name is Anfernee Chris “Boyong” Bangis, 22 years old and was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome when I was still 7 years old. Before I got this illness, I am a very simple child who has big dreams and just wants to help my parents. I dream of becoming a doctor but I being sick became a hindrance for me to fulfill all those dreams of mine.

I remember when I was a kid, we used to travel to Manila to be checked by the doctors there, as we do not have specialists before in our
place who could help me with Nephrotic Syndrome. Because of this illness, I was not able to study well as I need to skip class because of my condition. I have edema all over my body, I feel nauseous all the time and my whole body is just filled with pain. But with my will to finish my studies, I took up the ALS or Alternative Learning System and with the guidance of my family and God’s help, I was able to finish the secondary level. Since I was able to make it through, I had the courage to take up a 2-year program of Computer Technology. This has not been easy for me since I go to school even though I feel pain, feel dizzy and having some difficulty of breathing.

Sometimes, I even compare myself to my classmates especially when it comes to my physical appearance because I have a delayed growth development and I was not able to experience do the things they can because there are lots of things that I cannot do because of my illness.

But because of my will to finish my studies, I worked hard for it. Every step was not easy. I experienced being in the hospital while doing my thesis. Everything was all worth it because I have finished my studies with flying colors.

When I graduated and had high hopes that I will be able to help my family and myself, I decided to find a job. Unfortunately, on November 2017, I found out that I won’t be able to fulfill all my dreams because I was diagnosed with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) stage 5, on which only 5% of my kidneys are functioning. Everything followed, my hemoglobin kept on decreasing, I have high blood pressure, my whole body itches, my nose keeps on bleeding and my body weakened, I can’t sleep at night. My creatinine level keeps on increasing and it even reached 13.

I never wanted this to happen to me. No one wanted this to happen because I know that I am only eating food that I am allowed to eat and I am on a strict diet. I follow all my doctor’s orders and take all my medicines.

December 2017, I was advised by my nephrologist that I need to undergo dialysis as soon as possible because my body is starting to deteriorate and my body is being poisoned because of high creatinine. At this point, I began to feel depressed and hopeless that I might not make it. I already lost the will to live. But because of God’s help and love for me, the love and support of my family, I had the courage to beat this illness and go through with the dialysis. I was attached with an IJ (Internal Jugular) catheter on my neck and fistula 2 times because the procedure was not successful in my arms.

It has now been more than a year that I am undergoing dialysis and three times a week, I am being pricked with a large needle for me to survive this illness.

I am now knocking on your doors, asking for help as I don’t want to lose any hope again of living normally at to help my family. I am eligible for a kidney transplant but we would be needing a large amount of money to do this. At my age, I have a lot of dreams to fulfill and I hope that you will help me fight this battle. I know that with the help of God and St. Padre Pio, I will have my chance for a new life.
