Our Project

We are Exact Resemblance, a theatre company based in Vancouver. In February, we’ll be producing Constellations by Nick Payne, our second show. As a company, one of our core values is making theatre accessible to all, regardless of financial circumstances, but we need your help to do it.

Our goal is simple: to provide discounted tickets for high-school students and young people, and to remove financial barriers preventing others from experiencing all that theatre has to offer. We believe that the arts can be a tool for positive change by provoking empathy, changing attitudes, and offering a place where communities can thrive. And laugh together.

About the play

Constellations is a funny and heartbreaking love story, told through the framework of string theory. Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper, meet by chance, and are instantly drawn to each other. As their relationship grows, they are confronted by choices that will alter the trajectory of their lives. Moving and clever, Constellations is a play that makes you want to be alive.

Why we're asking for your help

Our previous production, The Emigrants, saw a huge turnout from students and young people thanks to discounted tickets. This time, we are producing independently, which means we are taking on all the upfront producing costs ourselves. To lower the cost of admission for this production, Constellations, we need outside support.

For every $10 donated, we can offer a $15 ticket to audience-members who would otherwise be excluded from theatre. By reducing the cost of admission, we are able to bring new audiences to the theatre, which we hope will contribute to the local theatre ecosystem in turn.

How Exact Resemblance Reaches New Audiences

How are we making a difference? We believe that arts organizations need to take an active approach to bringing new audiences to the theatre. During the run of our previous production, we reached out to university student unions and student groups to offer them discounted tickets. It was amazing to see how engaged audiences were– they stuck around after the show to talk to the artists and discuss the play with each other, and reached out after to tell us how the show resonated with them. This kind of response is what we want to see not just at our shows, but at theatres across the Lower Mainland.

For this production, we are also excited to offer our Open Room Mentorship program, which invites a number of emerging directors to audit our rehearsals for free. Participants will have the chance to be a part of the rehearsal process and receive mentorship from Exact Resemblance co-founder Cristiana Ripeanu, the director of Constellations. By running this program, we hope to foster the next generation of theatre-maker and promote the voices of makers traditionally excluded from theatre, including gender-diverse, women, immigrant, and refugee artists.
