Hi! My name is Cate, I am 31 years old, and I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Part of that means I have frequent nightmares, and I have a very difficult time going out into public places, especially when there is a crowd or a large number of people.
My doctor recently made the decision that it would be beneficial for me to have a service dog to assist me with my anxiety and make it easier for me to leave my home without having panic attacks and anxiety attacks. I was lucky enough to find a local organization, K9 Lifeline, that would work with me to train a service dog for my specific needs. Some of these tasks include:
- Creating a buffer of personal space around me in public places
- Providing deep pressure therapy to help calm and ground me during panic and anxiety attacks
- Interupt nightmares and panic attacks
- Respond to and interupt anxious behaviors
- Helping to locate an exit or safe space during panic and anxiety attacks
- Tactile stimulation to ground me to the present moment
- My particular dog would also be trained to assist with balance due to orthostatic hypotension
As you can imagine, service dogs are very expensive to obtain due to the extremely specialized training that is required for them and for the incredible work that they do to get dogs ready to be placed in a home. This is unfortunately well outside of what I can afford right now so I am here asking for help to help cover the initial, upfront costs. All of the money will be transferred directly to K9 Lifelines, which I will post proof of as it happens.
Having a service dog to help guide me through the world and anchor me when I am struggling would be life-changing for me and would help me be able to function better as part of society.
