Hi, my name is Michelle, and I'm a Registered Nurse, educator, mum, lifelong sewist, and a resident of Hume.
This year, I founded Threads Together Workshops, an initiative born from my belief that the proven, mindful practice of sewing is a powerful tool for fostering social connection, building essential skills, and promoting mental wellbeing in our community.
- Attending a Threads Together workshop means you get to learn something new, make something with your own two hands, make new friends and engage in the act of giving back.
- For example, at recent pilot workshops, participants created colourful capes for sick children. These items will be lovingly donated to an Australian charity called Capes for Kids, a wonderful charity that sends them to children facing long stays in the hospital. The joy of creation is amplified by the impact of our donation.
The Challenge: Making it Accessible
While sewing holds deep personal value for me, I recognised a significant barrier: quality learning-to-sew workshops are often expensive and inaccessible to many. I created Threads Together because I firmly believe that access to this valuable skill and self-care practice should be affordable and available to everyone.
Two successful pilot workshops have already proven the clear community need for this initiative. I currently have a waiting list of over 40 people wanting to attend the next session, and more continue to reach out daily via the Facebook page!
Our Next Stitch: Going Roving!
The program is now ready to scale, but we face a hurdle: workshops are currently limited by the availability of using sewing machines where they exist in Hume.
My goal is to become a fully roving initiative.
Becoming roving will enable us to run low-cost or free sessions at any Hume location, reaching residents closer to their homes and making the workshops truly accessible to all different ages and walks of life.
How Your Donation Helps Us Get Roving
To make this a reality, I require $2,000 in vital funding to purchase a dedicated fleet of portable sewing machines. This equipment is the engine of the initiative.
By securing this fleet, we can unlock the potential to reach hundreds more community members. To ensure long-term sustainability after the initial purchase, I plan to focus on seeking fabric donations from the community.
