Nicole was only five years old when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which led to a lifetime of blood glucose tests, insulin shots, and doctor visits. In the fall of 2015, Nicole’s kidneys began to fail, forcing her to undergo dialysis three days a week for almost four hours per day. She was placed on a waitlist for a kidney transplant shortly after her diagnosis. After four long years of waiting, Nicole switched to a waitlist at NYU, which would give her both a kidney and a pancreas. On October 8, 2019, she underwent an 11-hour operation for a double transplant.
Since the operation, Nicole has encountered many new health concerns, including contracting a virus common amongst transplant patients. She is currently unable to fight this virus due to being immunocompromised. Her doctors are testing many medications that cannot combat the virus and lead to multiple severe side effects. These ongoing health challenges forced Nicole to miss many of life’s opportunities, including attending her daughter’s graduation from Adelphi University. She continues to fight and refuses to give up, all while still having a smile on her face!
Nicole is currently in the hospital and undergoing various testing to determine the next steps. Nicole continues to show extreme gratitude, compassion, and hope during this fight for her health. We hope to alleviate some of the financial strain from the medical bills and pay it forward to someone who will give you the shirt off her own back! Anything you can provide will be embraced with deep gratitude from Nicole and her family, friends, and colleagues.
