In April, I will run the Marathon des Sables Legendary in the Sahara. 270 kilometers. Self-sufficient. A goal that I first set 15 years ago and I’m now finally realizing. I’m doing this as a personal challenge and to make a difference for the tiniest fighters among us.
I’m supporting an initiative that deeply moves me: a (workname) ‘Neo Bracelet’ and to make it happen, I want to raise €2,500. A bracelet concept that we are currently developing for all children and parents that are receiving care in one of the NICU’s in the Netherlands. Our goal is to start at WKZ Hospital and then make it available nationwide in all Dutch hospitals. It will resemble milestones such as;
First time kangaroo care.
First bottle.
First time out of the incubator.
First scan outside the unit.
These give parents hope during an intense period, and later something tangible to look back on together. To recall memories, put words to that time, and understand what happened, even years later.
To begin, we need to raise €2,500. This will allow us to create the first bracelets and charms and truly launch the initiative.
It’s close to my heart as my daughter was born weighing 850 grams and spent months in the NICU at the WKZ. That period left a deep impression on me that I carry every day. That’s why it feels so natural to dedicate my energy, time, and this challenge to this cause.
Together with neonatologists, nurses, and partners like Care for Neo, Klein Meisje Maakt een Reisje, and Hogeschool Utrecht we are working to make this idea a reality for all family’s.
The idea came from Jozua van Duren, driven by his passion for innovation and years of experience as a NICU nurse.
