Hi there! My name is Mason Sutherland and I'm a senior at Florida State University double majoring in Biology and Psychology. I am a pre-medical student who is done applying to medical schools and am currently interviewing at schools. I've started this page because I strongly want to go to Managua, Nicaragua during this winter break (December 31 - January 8) with the MedLife organization on campus to help people by giving them medical care, educating them on potential health hazards, building infrastructure in poor villages, and making any improvements which could increase their quality of life. Some of the medical services we provide are general medicine, dental, vaccinations, and OB/GYN. The people in these countries do not have access to healthcare or wealth like most modern countries have, so it is our responsibility to spend our time and money to help improve the human condition everywhere in the world. MedLife works with local doctors and nurses on treating patients not just for the week that we are there during winter break, but also conducting patient follow-ups to insure their treatments are effective after we leave.
Two years ago, I traveled to Lima, Peru with MedLife during Spring Break. During this trip, we helped over 1,500 people recieve medical and dental care, taught over 1000 children proper dental hygeine, and built several concrete staircases which spanned the length of mountainside villages. I can say with certainty that the week spent in Peru was one of the best of my life; there is little that compares to the smiles of people who recieve free medical care that greatly enriches their lives.
My goal for this page is to raise $1,800.00 which would not only go towards paying for flights and the fee associated with the program but also allow me to purchase high quality supplies to bring with me for the impoverished villages, such as toothpaste/toothbrushes, first aid kits, water filters, ibprofen, as well as toys and sports equipment for children. Any amount of money will help, and all proceeds are going directly towards the enrichment of these people's lives. I, and the people in need, thank you for your time and contribution!
