My Story

Hello, my name is Y.C. I prefer to use my initials because I am afraid my children could be removed from the catechism program.

I am a mother of three children. I enrolled two of my children in catechism so they could be baptized and receive their First Communion at "St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church." At the time of registration, I paid $150 for each child. I clearly asked what the next steps would be and when the baptism and First Communion would take place. The priest told me that I only needed to register the godparents in December or January and that they would let me know the rest. At no point was I informed that there would be additional fees.

About two weeks ago, the priest called me and told me that I needed to register the godparents for the baptism during the first week of February. I asked what I needed to bring, and he told me the godparents’ names and $350 per child. I was very surprised. I also have a 5-year-old daughter whom I want to baptize together with her siblings, and I was told it would be $350 for her as well.

I was then informed that the $350 fee was only for the baptism, and that the First Communion would cost an additional $350 per child. In total, the amount comes to approximately $1,750, which I simply cannot afford right now.

In December, I lost work hours and have not been able to pay my rent on time. Little by little, I have fallen into debt. In addition, my children suffer from asthma and were sick during November and December, which meant more medical expenses and fewer hours at work. I explained all of this honestly and respectfully to the priest.

I understand that the Church asks for donations, but I have always believed that the sacraments should not have a fixed price. With humility, I offered to donate $200 and also offered to help by cleaning the church or serving in any way for several months until the amount was covered, but my offer was declined. I was told that if I did not pay the full amount within two weeks, my children would not be able to continue in catechism, since they cannot be prepared for First Communion without being baptized first.

This situation breaks my heart. My children have studied, taken exams, and have a sincere desire to grow closer to God. It deeply hurts me to see their dream at risk because of a financial situation that is beyond my control.

For this reason, I am humbly asking for help. Any donation, no matter how small, will help my children receive their sacraments and continue their journey of faith.

Soy madre de tres niños. Inscribí a dos de mis hijos en el catecismo para que pudieran bautizarse y hacer su Primera Comunión en la iglesia St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. Al registrarlos, pagué $150 por cada niño. En ese momento pregunté cuáles serían los pasos a seguir y en qué fecha serían el bautizo y la comunión. En diciembre perdí horas de trabajo, no he podido pagar la renta a tiempo y poco a poco me he llenado de deudas. Además, mis hijos sufren de asma y estuvieron enfermos en noviembre y diciembre, lo que me obligó a trabajar menos y gastar más en su salud. Todo esto se lo expliqué al sacerdote con sinceridad.

Entiendo que la iglesia solicita donaciones, pero siempre he creído que los sacramentos no deberían tener un precio fijo. Con humildad ofrecí donar $200 y también me ofrecí a ayudar limpiando la iglesia o sirviendo por varios meses hasta cubrir el monto, pero me dijeron que no era posible. Me informaron que, si no pagaba el total en dos semanas, mis hijos no podrían continuar en el catecismo porque no pueden prepararse para la comunión sin estar bautizados.

Esto me duele profundamente. Mis hijos han estudiado, tomaron exámenes y tienen una ilusión sincera de acercarse a Dios. Me parte el corazón ver cómo ese sueño puede romperse por una situación económica que está fuera de mi control.

Por eso, con mucha humildad, estoy pidiendo ayuda. Cualquier donación, por pequeña que sea, nos ayudará a que mis hijos puedan recibir sus sacramentos y continuar su camino en la fe.
