Hello, my name is Emili. I’m a 25 year old, black and queer independent artist who moved from Germany to Cambodia in 2023. This year as I took a trip to Thailand and found out I had a pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs that have clogged blood vessels, similar to a heart stroke, but in the lungs). The pulmonary embolism was caused by me taking a contraceptive pill and then a flight Asia. At the time I was not really aware of the risks of the contraceptive pill and my symptoms, which led to a delay in treatment and a risk of death. I spent 3 weeks in Bangkok, until the doctors found out that I am suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

Luckily, I’m still alive and took time to recover at home in Cambodia. I took out health insurance after my departure, but the costs are not covered. I can mostly cover the costs of my stay in Bangkok and the medical bills attached by myself but only starting in December.

I’m going to be part of an art event in November and will have the chance to sell my prints there. For printing, I need approximately [amount]. Hopefully I’m going to be able to partially cover the costs with my art sales.

As my pain worsens again, I’m in need of medical checks here in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for my medication. One check costs around 230$, while one pack of medication will cost me 200$ and will last for 13 days (53 pills). I’m in need of three medical checks in total, which makes a sum of 890$ including the costs of the pills.

The doctor said if I do not seek medical support as soon as possible, in my current condition, my life expectancy is approximately three years. It is shocking and scary.

Right now, I am just trying to keep myself busy and not think about it too much as it is too much to bare for me.

As I dearly hope that a complex treatment will not be necessary, I would still like to include living expenses for one month, even if it is unpleasant for me to ask. This health journey has been exhausting and I would like to give my body the rest it needs, and slightly decrease my workload for a month and focus on my physical and mental well-being.
