Why it matters:
This project will broadly address civil and women's rights, specifically in Islamic communities, and related issues such as child marriage and forced marriage. The United Nations (UN) views forced marriage as a form of human rights abuse since it violates the principle of the freedom and autonomy of individuals. Forced marriage can have adverse consequences on the enjoyment of human rights, such as the right to education and sexual and reproductive health.
Child marriage denies a young girl her freedom of choice, future, education, and dreams.  Forced marriages are unfortunately still a significant problem today. In Tanzania, it's estimated that 4 of every 10 women were or will be married before their 18th birthday, often against their will. Worldwide, an estimated 100 million girls have been forced to marry before the age of 18 in the last decade alone. Statistics from UNICEF reveal that in African and Islamic communities, child marriage is still prevalent. For example, in Niger, Bangladesh, and India,  more than 50% of girls get married under 185.
