Hi,

My name is Sergio Nuñez, and I’m a young physicist from Peru. I’ve been accepted to pursue my dream of earning a master's degree in nuclear physics at the University of Bologna in Italy.

I’m fortunate to have received full funding for my studies, but unfortunately, this does not cover the additional costs of visa, flight tickets, and necessary paperwork, estimated to be a total of $2108. To some, this amount might not seem overwhelming, but for a first-generation student from a country where the minimum wage is $280 a month—and where job opportunities for scientists are almost nonexistent, and as a result, very limited access to loans or credit—this amount is a significant barrier. I’m thrilled to join the program but disheartened because my current financial situation makes it impossible to take this final step.

I feel a bit embarrassed asking for this, but I believe it’s worth it. It’s a battle that deserves to be fought. Any contribution—big or small—would be deeply appreciated.

Some of my background:

I am a first-generation student and physicist from Peru with a passion for nuclear and particle physics research. I completed my undergraduate studies at the National University of Engineering in Peru and conducted research at Yale University and the Colorado School of Mines. In addition, I’m also a content creator dedicated to sharing science and raising awareness about science in society.

My research:

I'm researching one of the most enigmatic particles in the universe—neutrinos. These particles have revealed that our understanding of the universe is incomplete. As part of my research, I’m developing new machine-learning techniques to study neutrino behavior during nuclear processes. This research could contribute to critical global efforts like nuclear disarmament, cancer treatment, nuclear medicine production, and the safety of nuclear energy. I’m beyond excited to study at the University of Bologna, where I know I’ll gain cutting-edge knowledge in this field.
