My name is Sara Gammons, and if don’t know my story, I had the privilege of donating a kidney to my husband Jeff just two years ago! September 19th we celebrate our kidney-transplant anniversary.

I want people to know how safe and effective it is to be a living organ donor.

Modern medicine gives us the capacity to offer a piece of ourselves to prolong another life; whether it be a friend, relative, or stranger!

When I was preparing myself to be a donor for my husband, we were driving long hours several times a week for both our appointments. Despite working in retail at the time, I only missed one single appointment of his, and made sure I could always be by his side. I was constantly compiling a list of questions and things to research, not even knowing who might answer these queries for me.

Yes, some of those got answered by my faithful team of doctors at Miami Transplant Institute the week before our surgery, but what warmth and comfort it would have been to have someone coaching me along the way, giving me hints of how things might be. Before I met Jeff, I’d never really been aware of the process of living donation, so I was diving in head first without knowing what was in ahead.

I questioned how my family and friends would handle the news when I announced that I was a successful match, but ultimately decided that I was committed to this no matter how much support I had. I needed my husband to be healthy and strong, and my donation was the closest thing to a miracle that we could ask for.

During the 5 months of testing and preparation, and now in the first 2 years since our transplant, I continue to recognize that people are not familiar with the living donation process. Not only its existence, but how safe and effective it can be. I walk through the grocery store with a t-shirt that says I have one kidney, and someone asks if it’s a joke.

So why would you volunteer yourself to be an organ donor if you’re not familiar with it and don’t hear wonderful stories raving about its success? As a proud donor myself, and someone who’s had a camera in my hand since I was single digits, I want to use my first-hand experience to bring awareness and understanding.

Recently I have connected with many wonderful donors who are ready to share their success stories to the world. I also have arranged interviews with some of the top recognized professionals in the field of kidney transplantation.

It is just heartbreaking to realize the needs that are not being met and how many people are sitting on a list with no clue when they will even have a chance to be chosen for a kidney transplant. My husband has told me many times, as a 2-time recipient, just how life-consuming and difficult it is to be on dialysis for several years, while not knowing how long it will last or when it will end.

I would like to crowd fund this documentary project, because I have a lot of things I’d like to include and want the opportunity to make a big impact as an advocate and donor.

This funding would cover things like editing and camera equipment, travel expenses for interviews (such as food, hotels, et cetera), and compensating any helpers we might hire during the process.
