Fund Sammie's Top Surgery and Recovery
Donation protected
I have known Sammie since 2016 and since then, I have been honored to watch them grow into their most authentic self.
I remember standing in their bedroom while they threw away all their women’s clothes. I witnessed the joy they got when wearing oxford shoes and the comfort a simple white t-shirt and jeans gave them. Regardless of their proclivity to sunburn, a favorite day for Sammie consisted of hours of sunshine and going topless in their backyard or down at the river. I remember watching them look into a mirror before a night out, restlessly adjusting their button up, their hands trying to press their breasts down, wishing their clothes could fit differently.
Then, I watched gender affirming care transform Sammie’s life. I watched dysphoria turn to euphoria and discomfort turn to confidence. A stubbly beard turned into a thick one and soon, their blue eyes were brighter, and their shoulders relaxed for the first time since I’ve known them.
It is a beautiful thing to watch someone start to feel at home in their body.
And now you can help continue to build that home.
Sammie has been talking about top surgery for years, dreaming of a life without breasts before they even realized what was possible. When Sammie was eleven, their mom took them to Target to look for a bra. Their mom instructed Sammie to “go find something you like.” Sammie came back with a roll of duct tape. It doesn’t get clearer than that.
Sammie’s top surgery is finally scheduled for the end of April and we are putting out a mutual aid request to help fund their surgery and recovery.
Insurance covers most of the surgery, but Sammie’s out of pocket cost will be $1750. Additionally, they will be out of work for a month, and three of those weeks will not be covered by PTO.
We are hoping to raise $4,000. Anything you can contribute makes a difference. If you can’t contribute, you can share this with folks you know who can. No donation or action is too small.
I know so many people are feeling fear and anger about the administration’s efforts to erase trans folks. And even though trans folks aren’t going anywhere, they need your love and support now more than ever. Now is the right time to take care of your trans community. Now is the right time to fund someone’s gender affirming care.
Love,
Sammie's best friend,
