We want to bring school streets to Denver. A school street is street closed to cars next to elementary schools so children can safely walk and bike to school. Right now, in Denver, the permitting process is cumbersome and cost prohibitive.
We want to commission a white paper study to give a recommendation to Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, so they can understand how other cities like Vancouver and elsewhere make school streets part of their community to empower kids to walk and bike to school.
We tried doing a school street in Denver in the spring of 2025 and DOTI required 40+ traffic signs to close two blocks of residential streets next to one elementary school.
We want to hire a current Colorado legislative aide, an expert in public policy work, that has written white papers before. Her name is June Churchill and she will be doing research and writing the white paper. June has already done a white paper on speed enforcement cameras in Denver and is an excellent writer and also a volunteer on the DOTI Advisory Board. If we are able to raise $600 it will allow us to fund 20 hours of work for her to research policies for school streets in other cities so we can recommend these best practices for Denver. If we are able to raise more than $600 it will allow us to fund additional research hours for more best practices and comparisons.
