Help fund the Regis University Romero program's student pilgrimage to learn about the roots of Latin American immigration: US funded conflicts in Guatemala and El Salvador. The program is named after Salvadoran Jesuit Saint Oscar Romero who spoke out against violence and social injustices inflicted by the US funded government against the common people during their Civil War, and was assassinated because of it in 1980. The Romero program students live the message that Oscar Romero preached through seven pillars: community, hospitality, service, solidarity, simplicity, spirituality, and justice. The program’s infrastructure for these pillars are living together in a humble home with a shared grocery budget, hosting biweekly Dinners open to all Regis students, hosting biweekly social justice speakers, each volunteering in the community five hours a week, participating in seeking Simplicity Challenges, and finally the pilgrimage to learn about US Latin American intervention from first person sources. The Romero program has been around for over thirty years, all the while a small but radical example of choosing to prioritize the idea of community in the home, in one’s city, and within our global family. We try to live out the global family with our listening pilgrimage in Central America, however this trip costs $2,500 a student, so the financial feasibility ability of our college student household attending will depend on grassroots fundraising.
