Fund Paul Lux's Medical Procedure

Someone, who has spent a lifetime helping and serving others, needs help. And while we know it makes him uncomfortable to be the one on the other end of help, I know we can all make this happen.
For a large part of Paul Lux’s adult life, he has dealt with a number of different medical issues and many types of pain. In the past five years, a few of the pain-related issues have become more and more debilitating. Besides increased pain and declining strength in his back and both legs, a daily, excruciating, intermittent pain in the one area no man would ever want this pain, became unbearable. In the last couple years, that particular pain, in that particular area, has made impossible that particular way a husband and wife connect at the most intimate level. Pain destroying joy. His pain, now their pain.
Until last year, a diagnosis was always elusive. Decades of pain pills, but no answer. Then, by the grace of God, his wife Kristina had a “chance” encounter to meet an expert speaker at a conference she was attending for her work helping marriages. This expert on marriage, specifically in marriages with issues in that area, was fascinated with the uniqueness of Paul’s situation. He offered an invitation to meet the country’s top doctor in that field. After a complimentary 10-minute phone consult, the expert doctor was also intrigued and suggested that Paul may have a situation that is the subject of a medical journal study he is currently conducting.
With the financial help of some special people, Kristina and Paul drove down to San Diego, and after a battery of tests, blood work, imaging, etc., Paul has been diagnosed with a rare condition. In addition to arthritis and a number of bulging discs, one disc in Paul’s lower back is torn (and has been for years) and has been leaking spinal fluid. This leak has been irritating the lining of the spinal column and damaged the surrounding nerves – the nerves to his legs and that area.
As part of this medical journal study, Paul has the opportunity to have a cutting-edge surgery to repair the torn disc and properly deal with the affected nerves. Unfortunately, medical insurance does not cover this new procedure and so he is a “cash customer.” The good news is that, as part of the study, the cash costs are radically reduced, covering mostly the facility and ancillary costs - much of the doctor costs being waived. The estimated costs for everything, including travel to and from San Diego, etc., is $20,000.
First and foremost, please pray for Paul (and Kristina) – for his pain, for their relationship in the midst of this long journey (Paul and Kristina celebrate 25 years of marriage this year!), and for the funds necessary to pursue this encouraging development.
Second, please prayerfully consider contributing anything towards this procedure. Let’s see if we can get this fixed once and for all for Paul!
How do we know Paul and Kristina? My wife, Marissa, and I (and our 5 kids) were next door neighbors to the Lux’s for 13 years. Our families have been friends for over 17 years. Paul has always been a dedicated husband and father, and one of the hardest working guys we know, whether as a painter and small-business owner, as a volunteer in various ministries, or now as Pastor of the Hayward campus of Cornerstone Fellowship. Our kids are so close, that after a year of being neighbors, they’d literally wore a path between the two houses and to this day don’t even bother knocking when they come over. We have watched the whole family grow in their love and service of our Lord and count ourselves very blessed to be in their fellowship as both our families have blossomed and flourished. We know Paul doesn’t think he ‘deserves’ a break, but anyone who knows him like we do, knows he does deserve a break, and that he serves a God who answers prayer. We’re looking forward to watching the blessings flow toward Paul and Kris. We humbly submit this request to his friends and ours, covered in prayer.
