Liminal is a short, written by Ella Spanjersberg, and directed by Li Lucy Brandt, filming in February and March of 2023.

WHAT IS 'LIMINAL'?

Liminal tells the story of teenagers, Olivia and Riley's friendship and its evolution through the time they spend together. It is a story of Queer nostalgia and desire set in locations that force the viewers to feel both the disconnect and familiarity of the relationship.

Liminal spaces can be defined as "a location which is a transition between two other locations or states of being. Typically these are abandoned, and oftentimes empty - a mall at 4 AM or a school hallway during summer, for example. This makes it feel frozen and slightly unsettling, but also familiar to our minds."

This concept of 'liminal spaces' is the inspiration for our storytelling. Liminal spaces are often associated with horror as they cause so much unease. But what about the unease of a high school relationship? The unease of being in love with your best friend and being completely in the dark about their feelings for you. We want to amplify the horror and discomfort that is experienced in everyday life through these locations.

In our story, Riley and Olivia meet time and time again in these liminal spaces slowly evolving their relationship. As they spend more time together Olivia becomes further engrossed in wasting her time away with Riley as a friend. Riley becomes fascinated with Olivia and slowly falls in love. When it's time for Olivia to leave for college the friends must face the situation head-on.

WHY WE ARE FUNDRAISING

As Emerson College students we are lucky to be able to utilize our peers for crew and cast. We also get access to equipment through our school's equipment distribution center. That being said we still need some additional funding for food, transportation, locations, props and festival submissions.

Without these things, Liminal cannot come to fruition and we need your help!
