Fund Our Sci Fi Dance Film, "Emerging!"

Monica Parra and Jessie Nowak, operating together as Irregular Dance, have imagined this dance film project for over 2 years. We want to try something new, exploring dance film as a medium for science fiction storytelling. We believe sci fi is a powerful metaphor to explore complex issues. For "Emerging," a group of reptilian humanoids represent marginalized races and a futuristic setting explores climate justice and how the many suffer because of the power and greed of a few.

We are individual emerging artists and rely on the power of our community and networking to raise these funds. This goal will allow us to pay all the artists and collaborators: including dancers, filmmakers, makeup artists, photographer, artistic directors, as well as costuming, location, and feeding everyone! Dancers are often the labor cost that gets cut first and we believe in paying them fairly for their artistry and expertise. A significant amount of our budget is reserved for paying dancers due to the rehearsal process that starts months before filming. 

Thanks to Regional Arts and Culture Council, we were able to complete the first phase of the project, creating the above teaser in order to share our vision for the project. Because of those funds, we are now in phase two: rehearsals with our 9 dancers and final production in May!
