INTRODUCTION:
In today’s society, there is an omnipresent struggle between ourselves and our relationships to food, bodies, and exercise.
But our shameful feelings, toxic behaviors, and consuming thoughts are so normalized, so widespread, and so far from our conceptualization of “disordered.“
We set out to explore this unnamed, collective struggle and draw attention to our shared, flawed sense of what we’ve come to believe is... “NORMAL.”
“NORMAL” is a 10-minute animated film that weaves together dozens of audio interviews into a singular animated story. Through an ensemble of 40+ voices, viewers follow an animated, amorphous protagonist as they navigate tumultuous moments with food and their body. This story explores our collective nuanced relationship with the mirror, the menu, the scale, the plate, the gym, the opposite sex, the reality of self-objectification, and our disordered sense of “Normal.”
TARGET AUDIENCE:
- People who have experienced the pain, shame, and isolation of a “disordered” relationship with food and their bodies, but have lacked language or representation around their experiences. We’d like these viewers to feel less alone.
- People who have a healthy, non-intrusive relationship with food and their bodies, but might be naive to the pain, shame, and suffering going on around them. We’d like these viewers to gain a deeper understanding of their loved ones.
- Eating disorder specialists, educators, and parents who want to utilize the film as a resource. We’d like these viewers to feel empowered by our film to have deeper, more honest conversations about our collective, destructive “Normal.”
ANIMATION STYLE:
We’re collaborating with an incredibly talented animator named Michael Pisano to bring this film to life. Michael has done animation and motion graphics for Vice, CNN, Comedy Central, and NBC.
Our animation style blends expressive, hand-drawn aesthetics with conceptual depth. Think freehand lines, fluid characters, and an amorphous protagonist that embodies all of us.
While the shape-shifting principal figure will remain simple in form, their visual world is bursting with color and constant motion, emphasizing emotion, metaphor, and multiplicity over realism.
INTERVIEWEES:
THE CREATORS:
Atlee Feingold has worked in TV and Film Production for the last 15 years. Starting as an assistant in the Art Department, Atlee quickly progressed onto Production Coordinator, Story Producer, Assistant Editor, Lead Editor, and freelance Writer & Director. Most recently, Atlee worked as the Director of Post for VICE’s Marketing Department. In her career, Atlee has worked for major production houses such as BBC, TLC, VMG, RSP, NBC, to name a few.
Atlee’s journey with disordered eating, eating disorders and body dysmorphia started at around ten years old. In adolescence she struggled with both anorexia and bulimia for thirteen years. Now, after years of self-motivated healing, Atlee is proud to say she is fully recovered. Atlee hopes NORMAL will aid us in acknowledging our shared struggles, validate us through our similarities, and help us to feel less alone in the shame of our shared dysfunction.
Dee Wisne has worked as a producer in documentary TV and FILM for 5+ years. Dee has co-produced series for HBO, Amazon, and PBS. Her most recent project, “Survival Mode,” premiered on NBC and Peacock in Summer 2025. Dee studied film at Columbia University, Barnard College where she graduated summa cum laude.
Dee has struggled with her body image for most of her life. After starting her first diet at the age of 9, she bounced from diet fad to binge-meal for most of her adolescence and early twenties. Never feeling like she identified with the romanticized eating disorders she saw on Tumblr, Dee felt confused and alone in how much her self-hatred impacted her life. Food remains an emotional topic for Dee, but she has learned to accept her body as healthy and imperfect.
