Aloha,
My name is Niki and I'm a film major at Portland State University. I'm a passionate student with a desire to create films and have experiences that expand my abilities to tell stories.
I've always had a passion for film and I've always had a passion for horror films. Some of the best horror films ever made come out of Japan. From Hideo Nakata's Ringu (1998) to Kaneto Shindo's haunting ghost tale Kuroneko (1971); from Kōji Shiraishi's NOROI: The Curse to Kiyoshi to Kurosawa's Cure (1997); the list is endless, and my watchlist is never-ending.
This year, the school of film at Portland State has created a great opportunity for its film majors to be able to attend a Faculty Led Study Abroad Program to Tokyo called Storytelling and Society in Japanese Film.
During this Study abroad opportunity we will be going to the National Film Archive of Japan to deepen our understanding of film preservation, historical context and scholarly analysis; visit studios to learn about the importance of Anime along with getting a firsthand insight into the workings of Japan's film industry and its historical significance. Those are just a few of the many exciting things this program has to offer. This study abroad program will require a lot of homework, so this experience will be both rewarding but also allow me to use these credits towards my degree.
As a Kanaka from Hawaii; who has never traveled outside the main-states of the USA, this will be my first time experiencing a different country; so I had to aim high and go for this opportunity.
The Program fee is $5,860.00.
That is a whopper of a total but as we all know, Tuition these days has never been higher.
I will also need to raise funds for spending money and the program coordinator is estimating at least $1000 dollars to bring extra.
GoFundMe also takes a portion of the proceeds out of each donation for using the platform, so Iʻve made my goal to be 7,000 dollars.
Along with Filmmaking I also really love painting. So visiting Japan would also inspire more art that Iʻd be able to create and expand on my artistry.
I hope this inspires you to contribute to my campaign and if you canʻt afford it, please consider sharing with your community.
Mahalo nui loa,
Niki
