Help Fund my tuition for studying abroad in Spain!

Hi, my name is Delilah Alvarado and I am a Junior at The Philadelphia High School For Girls. I created a fundraiser to help me follow my dream of joining this amazing study abroad program with the CIEE organization. I am very grateful to be presented with such an opportunity I believe could help me grow as a person; culturally and mentally.

Unfortunately, I was not awarded the scholarship portion of my application. Nonetheless, this is still a win however, due to unforeseen circumstances as a full Tuition student, it will cost $7000+ . This experience will provide me with a better outlook on the world and will help me embrace significant parts of my culture. I wasn’t raised in a Spanish-speaking household and growing up I lost my ability to fluently speak Spanish and due to this I don't feel as connected with my family/culture as one should. Last year I experienced a situation that made me aware of my lack of knowledge and Education with my native language. At that moment I was disappointed and hurt with myself because I wasn't able to communicate with a family member of mine who I just met on our First family trip to Puerto Rico.

I would love to be able to connect to my culture more. I feel like given the opportunity to study in a Spanish-dominated country will allow me to do so. It is very important for me to be aware of things that aren't a part of my world and to be respectful and open-minded about all things. I want to be able to meet new people, create new friendships and learn from them. I want to see the world from a different perspective not the one thrown at us because of the poverty we experience in life. I want to be educated on my culture. I want to bring home stories to tell my sisters and let them know that world is bigger and greater then what Philly makes it out to be. I will show my sisters, family, friends and those in my community that you can do what you put your mind to! We need to break these generational curses and it start with one person! I want to be that person for my family and encourage other teens to do the same.
