This coming school year will be my 6th year teaching in Bridgeport. In all of those years, I've never had a budget for my classroom. Bridgeport students deserve all of the same amazing things their peers in surrounding districts receive.
This year, I am teaching 5 sections of Forensic Science. It's an incredible class that is very hands on and project-based. Since it is an elective course, most students have chosen to be there, which is likely the first time they've gotten to decide what they want to spend their time learning. Also, since it is essentially project-based, they are spending little time cramming notes from a PowerPoint and more time modeling the same things forensic scientists do in real life. You just don't get that experience often in education and it leads to more buy in on their part are a greater opportunity for me to determine their needs and meet them.
Project-based courses put a premium on supplies. I was constantly scrambling for materials last year. I put a lot of money, time, and creativity into my class to make sure my kids were learning and having fun doing it. I believe it was a success and I'm looking to capitalize on what I learned last year.
Items I'm looking to purchase this year include:
-Art Supplies - We do so many creative projects. We need paper, crayons, colored pencils, more scissors, clay, glue, etc.
-Food- Unfortunately, not all my kids have access to wholesome food at home and need a bite to eat to hold them over. You can't learn on an empty stomach
-Forensic Science Specific Materials- There are several websites I have browsed but have not been able to purchase from due to costs. I'm looking to get latex gloves, coveralls, and other materials that will allow students to fell like they are doing real Forensics work. I'm also looking forward to doing a shoe impression activity where kids have to make molds of their shoes, which are an item of clothing they are usually very proud to show off.
-Posters/Models- I currently have only Biology-related posters and models in my class as I have been teaching Biology for most of my time at Central. It'd be great to have my classroom posters reflect what I am teaching.
-General Classroom Supplies- I'm constantly running out of paper and usually have to buy an extra case a year to make sure I've always got copy paper. I also had to buy a laser printer and that uses one $60 toner cartridge a year. I've purchased staplers, pencil sharpeners, notebooks, etc. and will look to continue to make sure my classroom is properly set up for learning every day.
My students need you to help me so I can be the best teacher for them. I'm hoping to have a special set of funds that will help inspire my students with the proper materials. Help me and my students have an amazing year. Let them know what it feels like to learn in an environment where a lack of funds won't hold them back!
