On October 8th 2024, as Hurricane Milton began hitting southeast Florida, I rescued my foster dog (a pittie mix I named Millie) from death’s door. The month prior she had been found abandoned/dumped with a note attached to her collar. She was confused, scared, and stressed out in the loud shelter – they labeled her aggressive and dog reactive, and were going to euthanize her. Not on my watch!
She has been an absolute joy to foster – not aggressive or dog reactive at all. In fact, she gets along with my own pittie extremely well. The first week I had Millie, she didn’t know what cuddling was – but she quickly became a cuddling fanatic who whines at me if it gets too late at night and we still haven’t cuddled on the couch wile I watch TV. She is energetic, playful, a goofy weirdo, and so darn lovable.
Since October, Millie has had a few different issues: hives on her skin, a cut on her leg, a yeasty paw, and an inflamed eye. All of these ailments pale in comparison to the life-threatening journey Millie has been on this month in July 2025. It started with throwing up on the 4th of July, then the next evening she stopped eating. I took her to the ER vet on Sunday morning, then my vet the next morning.
Millie had surgery 4 days later. Turns out she had eaten an avocado pit, and it had gotten stuck in her small intestines. I had gotten poor advice from the first vet I went to – due to the extra days spent doing pointless IV fluids (instead of going to surgery), part of her small intestines became necrotic. So the surgeons had to remove about a foot of her intestines.
3 days later I had a scare when she ripped up pee pads in her crate and ingested some of it. I immediately took her to the ER vet where they induced vomiting to get the absorbent material out before it reached her damaged & healing intestines.
In less than 2 weeks Millie has racked up more than $5k in medical costs, and nearly another $2k before this. $5k in such a short amount of time is way more than I can manage. I would be eternally grateful for any kind of financial help I can get for Millie's care. She is such a sweet dog and has many fans at the vet's office.
I’m happy to report that Millie is recovering well and is back in good spirits being her normal goofy self. Thank you SO much for reading and considering donating to Millie’s cause!
