Fund Medical Flight for Michael!
TL;DR Version:
Donate funds to fund Michael's medical flight!
Michael is in stable but serious condition due to cellulitis (bacterial infection) that is showing minimal response after 96 hours on big-gun antibiotics. He does not have access to critical specialist care in Hawaii and has been approved for an overnight, first class flight to Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago, where they have extended family to help with his long term care. His mother (a registered nurse) will fly with him to administer meds inflight. It's currently his best option for recovery but will cost at least $7,000 for the flight and for ambulence transportation if possible. Last-minute flights and transportation are expensive and the extra medical costs associated with the transfer are exhasting the family resources.
This is a massive financial burden on the family on top of the medical bills and out of network costs they are already accruing, so every little bit will be an enormous help.
On January 7th, Michael went to the Emergency room in Hilo for an infected bug bite that was not responding to presribed antibiotics. The infected area had grown rapidly to cover his leg and he was admitted to Hilo Medical Center with a serious staph infection and cellulitis. Doctors drained the wound and put him on three heavy antibiotics via IV but it had continued to grow and new colonies of infection began to show up on his arms and legs. This put him in a great deal of pain, as well as in danger for long term tissue damage. Doctors in Hilo have not been able to identify the specific strain for a more targeted approach.
On 1/10, the doctors recommended that he be medevacked to a neighboring hospital in Oahu, where a they have a specialist. As of 1/12, there are still no beds available in any of the three hospitals that doctor services. Under normal circumstances, Michael could be flown on an emergency medical flight to the nearest specialist, but insurance won't cover a medevack flight from Hawaii to the mainland. At this point, the doctors agree that he is stable enought to be flown commercially to the mainland in order to be treated by a specialist at Northwestern in Chicago.
Michael's flight is scheduled to depart 1/13, with Michael landing in Chicago on 1/14 .
Please consider helping Michael's family cover the cost of this unexpected and medical cost!
