GoFundMe If You Like Me: I Got Sued for Tweeting

Donation protected
Two years ago, I made a Twitter thread about a lawsuit I’d come across. It was a pro se suit filed by an NYU Law grad we’ll call G. I mocked the suit, as one does. And, just over a year ago, I got sued for my thread. G claimed that I had defamed him by posting my thread and by posting a picture which he had described but not included in his original suit (and which he later filed).

Although I’m a lawyer, I don’t practice in federal court and don’t do defamation, and I’m smart enough to know that representing myself is a bad idea anyway. I found (via twitter, of course) a lawyer, Max Rodriguez, who has done an amazing job. Max has litigated tirelessly against G and been incredibly supportive of me; if you ever need a lawyer I can’t recommend him highly enough.

On August 29, 2025, the District Court dismissed the case against me, without leave to amend, affirming that I had not defamed G. In response, G filed (1) a letter announcing his plans to file a motion for reconsideration; (2) an appeal to the Second Circuit; and (3) an entire new lawsuit against me. So that’s where we are.

I stand by what I said in the thread, and the Court confirmed I was legally allowed to say it. But that doesn’t change how awful this experience has been. How I’m constantly terrified that anything I say anywhere will end up in a court filing. How every time I see an SDNY caption I flinch. How when a friend was hurt I couldn’t be there for her out of fear that her attacker would sue me. How the anonymous twitter account I’ve had since I was 20, the place I’ve vented about everything from my grandfather’s death to breakups to period cramps, is now permanently associated with my full legal name. How this has affected my friendships, my marriage, my work, my life. How I’ve resisted even posting this GFM, because it means losing even more privacy.

But at this point I’m fighting on three fronts–the original suit, the second suit, and the appeal–and I don’t have a choice but to ask for help. Although eventually I hope to recover attorney’s fees, I’m a public interest attorney and civil litigation isn’t cheap. I’m lucky that I was even able to fight back; many defamation defendants end up defaulting because of unfamiliarity with the legal system or a lack of resources.

In an effort to retain just the tiniest bit of privacy, I’m not linking to the docket. What I’m doing instead is linking to a Google Drive folder which contains each and every filing in redacted form - 74 as of this posting, though I’m sure there will be more soon enough, and I’ll upload them too.

I appreciate any support you can give.
