oopsilon is Abbott Elementary (without the kids!) meets Scream Queens (without the death and horror!). The series takes place in Iowa City, Iowa, at the University of Iowa, where a disgraced fraternity attempts to rebrand itself—desperately trying to prove their worth in a campus culture that has turned against Greek life. Lovers of Oopsilon would also tune into English Teacher (2024) for the modern social commentaries and humor, Glee (2009) for their diverse and complex ensemble cast, and The Sex Lives of College Girls (2021) for their college-relevant themes. In the wake of a damaging exposé on University of Iowa Greek Life, the multicultural, misfit brothers of Tri-Upsilon Fraternity, Inc. embark on a desperate bid to salvage their reputation by spontaneously pledging… a white kid? Led by their neurotic president, Jordan, who carefully orchestrates their public image while navigating meetings with their overly involved Greek Life advisor, Sonya, the fraternity's six diverse members set out to prove to the student body and their new pledge that they're "just like everyone else"—but their attempts at redemption consistently backfire in spectacular fashion.

oopsilon initially began as a last-second pitch for my SCWR 365: Showrunning I course at DePaul University. This story examining a multicultural fraternity was merely a "concept of a plan" that blossomed into something much more. As a Brother of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., a Latino-based multicultural fraternity, I believed my insanely hilarious, culturally specific, and heartwarming experiences needed to be translated into my craft. Traditionally, fraternities and sororities have garnered a plethora of unwanted attention; for better or for worse. The abolish Greek Life movement is a very real & relevant topic that affects me, both as a member and as someone who is anti-Greek Life (ironic, isn’t it?). However, there is nuance to this subject as someone who has actively altered a lot of my own fraternity’s traditions, advocating for anti-hazing rituals and emphasizing accountability & education. I believe the creation of this show could effectively satirize Greek Life whilst discreetly exploring the implications it has on campus culture, self-discovery, trauma, etc. Given the often negative media portrayal of Greek life—some of which is warranted—there's a notable absence of balanced representation that I aim to create by offering a nuanced and satirical perspective through the lens of an underrepresented multicultural fraternity. While not claiming perfection, these characters demonstrate that fraternity members need not conform to harmful stereotypes. I envision creating a show that resonates with reform-minded Greeks who acknowledge existing stigmas and seek positive change. The series will speak to those who want to see authentic representation without falling into either pure criticism or blind celebration. Moreover, this project aims to reach beyond the Greek community. Even viewers with no interest in joining Greek life may find themselves rooting for this eclectic group of brothers. Fortunately, Greek life is more than just white dudes chugging down beers & white girls calling each other “fat” and I want to comedically portray its duality.
