I am Marvin R. Tarawally, co-founder and Executive Director at SMART Liberia, a social venture that equips Liberia’s brightest young people to lead social change. I am also a graduate of Babson College the African Leadership Academy.
I'm delighted to have been accepted into Saïd Business School to pursue an MBA starting this Fall. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the Oxford community and to begin the next stage of my journey towards building a solution to the future of education in Africa. However, I am counting on the kindness of friends, family, and strangers to make this dream come true. As of now, I have not been offered any scholarships to embark on this journey and my current work in the non-profit space does not permit self sponsorship. Why an Oxford MBA?
For me, having access to quality education has transformed my life and I am on a mission to pay-it-forward to all who need it. I can’t imagine a better time and space to shape the future of education in Africa, given all that we have available to us. I firmly believe that, with the right investments and innovations in education and entrepreneurship, Africa’s youth bulge will liberate our continent and unleash prosperity and economic development. With Oxford's focus on solving global challenges as well as its footprint in Africa, this MBA will provide the technical and analytical frames needed to build a solution to Africa's education crisis. I plan to return to the continent upon graduating next year.
My work at SMART Liberia
SMART Liberia equips Liberia’s brightest young people with the skills, opportunities, and network to solve our shared problems. Founded by three young Liberians in 2011, SMART Liberia has a track record of implementing successful youth-led projects. We have worked with over 25 schools and directly impacted over 500 students and reached over 200,000 young people via social media platforms. Currently, SMART Liberia has fourteen (14) young leaders studying abroad across three continents at several universities including NYU Abu Dhabi, University of Rochester, African Leadership University, etc. Together, our scholars have earned scholarships worth over U.S. $ 1.5 million from these institutions and other partners. Our young women entrepreneurs generated over $35k in revenue and employed 10 young people. Their businesses are addressing real local needs.
With my undergraduate education at Babson College, I was able to return home to build SMART Liberia into a vibrant organization, growing from $50k revenue to just under $500k in one year. For 2019, we are on course to impact at least one thousand big-hearted individuals who will develop and deliver the change that Liberia needs.
