Leah Stein Dance Company is invited to participate in a 10-day Subcircle Residency in Biddeford, ME from June 12th -21st!

We need your help raising $3000 to help fund the labor, travel expenses, and meals of all participating/collaborating artists: Shannon Brooks, Maddie Hopfield, Germaine Ingram, Kimya Jackson and Josie Smith.

This residency comes at an ideal moment when LSDC is seeking uninterrupted time to develop our research project “carry with you this place”. Leah is balancing teaching movement and sound workshops, working with the company in Philadelphia, creating programming for the Art Room Studio, and caregiving for her mother in VT. Subcircle residency offers a vital and necessary opportunity for Leah Stein and her company to refresh and deepen LSDC’s mission and creative work.

Our project “carry with you this place” centers on a deep listening vocal/movement practice to inquire about the ‘'archeology of our voices'. This inquiry opens connections to personal stories and images, supported and augmented by the collective. Our practice explores the inter-relationships of movement, sound, voice, image and the environment to investigate our collective and individual stories of origin, their influence and limits, and how we listen deeply to and are guided by our own and shared wisdom.

In preparation for our Subcircle residency, LSDC will practice together embodied storytelling with former LSDC member and guest artist Shavon Norris in early June. Leah is also continuing to work with vocal artist Samita Sinha to strengthen her facilitation of vocal embodiment and will intentionally bring these lessons to the company at our Subcircle residency.

Our daily research will include morning and afternoon movement, sound, and writing practices, in response to ‘what do I/we carry?’. We will hold time and space for both collective and solo practice to explore the gestures, images, and stories that emerge from ourselves, each other, and our surroundings. And through the week, structures will develop to honor the weaving together of our voices. Our process will be punctuated by exploring the environment, cooking shared meals, reflecting on our practice, storytelling, bonfires, and rest. At the conclusion of our residency, we will share our process and work with the local community in Maine through a showing/talk back.
