When I was diagnosed with cancer last year, it confirmed that I had inherited a genetic mutation - Lynch Syndrome - from my mom that predisposes me to a number of cancers. At this time, I’m in treatment for stage III endometrial cancer that had metastasized to my right ovary and pelvic lymph node.
Despite how monumentally this has impacted my life, I don’t see this as my biggest inheritance from my mom — that would be a passion for photography.
While I’ve found ways to include photographic projects in my life throughout the years, with my recent layoff from work, I have decided to take the leap and dedicate myself fully to my art.
I have two projects I will be pursuing: 1. taking legacy photographs for terminal patients at the cancer center I go to, and 2. a mixed media (interviews and portraiture) project focused on creatives (of all kinds) who have experienced hardships - be it financial, medical, etc. - and how they sustain their creativity throughout tough times.
I’m asking for your help to start this work while looking for longer-term funding opportunities. With the money donated, I will be able to purchase equipment (a backdrop stand, a prime lens, a reflector, and softboxes), sturdy storage cases for gear, a decent editing program license, and - critically - start this work now and hopefully be able to stay in my home into 2026 while doing so.
Very few people I know have much to spare, I know. It’s my hope that you’ll keep me in mind as you plan your year-end giving. This is not a charitable donation, but rather an opportunity to directly be a patron to an artist and work intending to uplift the cancer and creative communities in Richmond, VA.
Thank you for anything you can give.
(Note: the camera shown in the cover photo is not mine, but a photograph of another photographer’s camera taken by me.)
