Hello everyone! My name is Jordon Hyde, I am a sophomore psychology major at the illustrious Virginia State University, proudly representing the busy streets of Brooklyn, New York. I am proud to announce that I have been selected to study abroad through the HBCU African Education Coalition Program (HAEC).

Just as choosing to attend an HBCU was an intentional step in my academic and personal journey, studying abroad in West Africa reflects my desire to surround myself with new cultures and perspectives. I believe that the precondition for many professions is best understood when immersed in that community, and that growth comes from moments of culture shock that invite us to think and live differently, helping individuals learn from experiences within their community.

As I work toward my long term goal of earning a master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, this program will allow me to deepen my understanding of how psychology is studied, practiced, and lived within African communities. Through hands on service projects and immersive cultural learning, I hope to surround myself with the wisdom of West African approaches to learning, teaching, and wellness, knowledge beyond what I will experience in my undergrad.

In total, I am seeking to raise $5,500 to cover airfare, room and board, and program costs. This experience is not only an academic milestone but a transformative step in becoming a more culturally grounded, globally aware future practitioner.
