We are two sisters, Paula Boden and Lena Boden, and are currently producing the documentary Invisible Lines of Gendered (In)Securities about the gender-specific bureaucratic hurdles and uncertainties of the EU migration system with specific focus on German authorities.
Invisible Lines of Gendered (In)Securities specifically examines whether the bureaucratic barriers of the European migration system acknowledge or overlook gender-specific insecurities. The film accompanies people who identify as female, who fled to Germany to search for refuge – to eventually seek asylum or who have a residence permit – in their daily emotional and seemingly mundane lives while listening to their lived experiences of engaging with the bureaucratic EU administration as well as German authorities. Professional and expert knowledge regarding the EU migration process and laws will accompany these subjective insights to provide a secure understanding of the EU migration laws on a theoretical level. The message of the film’s angle with its personal narratives of people who identify as female who fled to Germany for safety is that it is crucial in a political discourse to not only reflect on the issues of national security, but to also include the perspectives of people who are most prominently affected: to eventually trust their judgement of the situations they are in. The film thus seeks to add an often overlooked layer of lived physical, psychological and societal experiences to the political debate in Germany and the EU.
We combine our expertise in film and journalism. Paula, a Political Scientist and Freelance Journalist, specializes in socio-political issues, migration, and security studies. As part of her master’s at the University of Copenhagen, she co-produced a documentary on asylum seekers in Denmark. Lena, with a BSc in Media Communication, has extensive experience in film production and screenwriting, having worked on various documentary projects and recently producing her short film Verpasst.
Our small FLINTA crew of 4 people is committed to maintaining high technical quality throughout the production. Every donation will go directly into the film. To make the discussions with people who identify as female across Germany possible, we need financial assistance, primarily for travel and equipment costs. Additionally, we seek to compensate the women who are voluntarily participating, especially considering that all, some of them have left, is their time – which they decided to spend with us. As a token of appreciation, we therefore aim to assist them where needed; whether by daily repairs, organizing legal assistance, or providing other essential support. Your financial contribution will therefore not only help realizing this film but also directly benefit those involved.
With our two incredibly talented directors of photography, we have the best support we could ask for. Although they are generously contributing their time for free, we strongly believe in fair compensation. While we can’t afford full payment, we would love to at least provide them with an expense allowance to fully appreciate their dedication.
In summary, your donation will be used for:
- travel costs (train tickets, accomodations, food)
- equipment costs (DJI mics, lighting equipment if needed, camera extras like adapters)
- assist the FLINTA* who voluntarily participate wherever help is needed (i.e. daily repairs, legal assistance, thank you gifts)
- expense allowance for our two director's of photography
- assist in postproduction (colour grading and sound editing)
We plan to make the documentary available for educational purposes and to reach a broader audience by submitting it to Film Festivals. This documentary is a collaborative effort – your support allows us to continue this work with care, respect, and the necessary resources.
Thank you for your support!
