Fund for Uncle Ray and Auntie Sue

This is difficult for me to talk about, but necessary now more than ever.

I grew up without my dad around. Like most dads in the Philippines, my father had to leave his family to work abroad. However, I didn’t grow up without a father figure.

I remember all four of my father’s brothers taking care of myself and my siblings, playing with us, helping us with homework, and taking us out. My eldest uncle, Uncle Ray, was always around. I have a lot of fond memories with him. My sister and I would be so excited every time Uncle Ray was coming to visit because we knew he would always give us 100 pesos with a big smile. He was always very generous to us. He’s also a great storyteller. We loved listening to his stories.

In the beginning of this pandemic (March), my (and my husband’s) first thought was to warn our relatives of how deadly this virus really is. I made sure I sent them messages to please not go out of their houses unless necessary. During this time, Uncle Ray was one of the few who obliged. He stayed home. Even though it wasn’t prevalent yet in the Philippines, he assured me that he was not going out. In April, as the pandemic got worse, Uncle Ray always sent us messages of prayers and told us to take care. He continued to stay home.

Toward the end of July, I noticed his messages had stopped. Then, the worst news came. He had contracted covid. He and his wife, Auntie Sue, were sent to the ICU. They have both been placed on ventilator support.

In the Philippines, it costs $1000 a day to be in the ICU, and government assistance for medical needs is limited. They don’t have health insurance available for seniors. Their hospital bills have now amounted to almost 4 million pesos, or around $80,000 USD.

Dear friends and relatives, I humbly ask for your support. Please pray for my uncle and aunt. Any financial support would make a difference. I thank you for taking the time to read my plea, and may you find it in your heart to donate. No amount is too small. I am asking if each of my Facebook friends could donate at least $2, I may be able to at least cover one day in the ICU. As someone who has worked in healthcare,  I can tell you that one more day can make a world of difference.

If you cannot donate at this time, I would really appreciate if you could share this post.

My Uncle was there for us when we were little. Now, it’s time for me to be there for him and his family. Thank you again, and please continue to be vigilant. Wear masks and practice social distancing.
