In 2015, Niamh Ní Dhomhnaill bravely waived her anonymity following the conviction of her ex-boyfriend for repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting her while she slept.
The full extent of the abuse only came to light when Magnus Meyer Hustveit wrote to Niamh and told her he had been using her “body for my gratification” for nearly a year.
Despite Niamh's courage, this damning evidence and Hustveit's own admission of guilt, his entire seven year sentence was suspended.
The extraordinary leniency of the sentence was appealed and Hustveit was jailed for 15 months. He was released a day early so he could 'catch a flight home to Norway'.
Full justice was not served.
We, as concerned citizens of Ireland, are taking this independent stand and are determined to help her to secure that justice.
Niamh is taking a civil case against Hustveit to recover medical expenses that have mounted over the years as a result of PTSD, a loss of earnings and to pursue an accountability that the courts system never demanded.
She has carried this burden alone for almost five years. Niamh has said "I feel I will always bear consequences as a result of his actions... those of us who have experienced rape or sexual abuse are, I believe, left with a life sentence. How can you look at life the same way again?"
Please help however you can in our donation towards her legal fees in this important stand for justice for survivors of sexual violence.
