Pushing yourself in sport is a universal way to overcome life's challenges. And cycling, at the highest level of the sport is defined by the ability to endure pain. And for most, on the other side of that physical and mental challenge, is an unexpected emotion–the tranquility and peace of a flow state. Cycling can be a pathway to inner peace, especially for those involved competitively, who may be processing something within them to drive them to higher places. This is the heart of, Camino.
Hi, my name is Eliot Grigo, and I'm a 2nd Year Cinematography Fellow at the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory. For my visual essay, I’m attempting something unconventional yet visually familiar to cinema. Camino is a film about the psychology of bike riding–and what those people may be enduring that brings them into the enriching world of bikes.
Here, you can find a reference board to understand the meditative, inspiring, and spiritual tone to the film.
At AFI Conservatory, the 2nd Year Visual Essay is one of the most important projects for Cinematography Fellows. It establishes what Fellows are visually interested in as they approach the industry full force, and it showcases our new storytelling skillsets learned at the Conservatory. These films are good–really good. Typically, they find themselves featured by AFI, Kodak, Panavision, and often lead to meaningful career opportunities. After investing so much into AFI, this is paramount to our team.
Bikes are important, this film is important–okay great but why do I need to raise all of this money?
A unique challenge with the visual essay (and unlike other productions at AFI) is that it is completely funded by Fellows–and I’m sure you’ve heard, going to grad school is incredibly expensive...so our team needs your help!
Camino needs help covering the following costs:
- $3,300 in Production. Vans, trucks, fuel, transportation, bathrooms, communication equipment, and more.
- $700 in Health and Safety. Set medic and more.
- $700 in Locations. Location fees, permits, marshals, and more.
- $1,900 in Special Camera Equipment. We're filming on a mountain in the Angeles National Forest with a bicycle–we need unique film equipment to make this production possible, and most importantly, safe.
- $600 in Food. Feeding and nourishing the crew!
- $1,500+ in Post-production. Color grading and finishing.
- $300+ in GoFundMe Fees. There is a sizable fee to raising this money that we account for.
- We'd love to raise more, to cover any potential accidental costs.
