My name is Mike Friedberg. I am a Chicago Public Schools teacher and have just completed my first year in Northeastern Illinois University's new graduate program- Master of Arts in Community and Teacher Leadership. The cohort seeks to connect teachers and community leaders for social justice work. We researched and have done activist work in fields such as utilizing resources for low-income schools, community asset mapping, analyzing education as as a social institution, diseminating power structures, as well as research into multiple theoretical perspectives in these fields.

The work we are doing is extremely important, especially where important decisions are being made within the sphere of public education. I recently completed an eight month research proposal, and am now waiting to hear from the university's research board on its approval. The research will be a mixed-methods study and will focus on effective and ineffective interventions for students with moderate to severe behavioral challenges. It will also be one of the first analyses of the popular and controversial teaching text, Doug Lemov's Teach Like A Champion. The study's publication will open up the door for future studies on the text, as well as we behavioral interventions, and culturally-relevant classroom management strategies.

My tuition was funded last year through a graduate assistantship. I worked intensely with two professors, including working on an anthology on culturally-relevant pedagogy which will hopefully be published by an academic journal within the next two years. I will continue to do this work, but was recently informed that my assistantship was only for one year. This was extremely frustrating news, as this crucial fact was not presented to me when I recieved the assistantship.

I am asking for your help to help me finish my degree. If I do not get this funding, I will not be able to execute my research proposal, finish my program, and complete the crucial social justice work that I have began. The research proposal in particular is an essential task that I cannot complete without the Internal Research Board's approval. This study is paramount because there is barely any research on Lemov's widespread and controversial teaching techniques, and my study will open up the door for more research.

I have five classes remaining. The tuition for each class is approximately $2,236, for a grand total of $11,680. This includes all student fees.

The summer class begins May 19th. If I could raise $2,236 by that time, I could be on track with my cohort. That class could be postponed for a year if necessary. However, I will need to return with the cohort at the end of August to execute my research, and at that point I will habe to begin payment to the university, for at least two classes, which would total $4,472.00.

I will post reciepts and updates of my tuition and payments to ensure transparency until I graduate. Also, I will share my completed article and am willing to share the research I have completed thus far.

I am beyond grateful for your help. I have been worried that my completion of the program is in jeopardy. With your assistance, you can help me complete research that will help students, teachers, and communities flourish. Thank you so much for considering making a donation. Words cannot express my gratitude.
