Hello, world! My name is Edcel Javier Cintron-Gonzalez, and I’m on the brink of a major milestone: I’m in my final three semesters of completing a Ph.D. in English Studies, focusing on Children’s and Young Adult Literature. Ever since my undergraduate days in Puerto Rico, I’ve dreamed of becoming a Children’s Literature scholar who amplifies Latinx/e voices and intersectional identities in stories for young readers. My research zeroes in on how literature can be a transformative space to address mental health issues within Latinx/e communities, breaking down stigmas and igniting healing.

My experience in my Ph.D. program has been enriching for my personal and academic growth. In 2023, I published my first chapbook of poetry titled Irma, Maria, Fiona & Me where I talk about my experiences surviving hurricanes in the Caribbean. In 2024, I had the opportunity to take the TedxNormal stage and gave my talk about processing my trauma using poetry and advocating for support during and after hurricanes. Currently, my research on Latinx/e representation made it as a finalist in the 2025 Image of Research competition hosted by the Office of Research at Illinois State University.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been accepted into the Children’s Literature Summer School at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, for 2025—and I was even awarded their scholarship to attend! This is an opportunity to learn from internationally recognized scholars, expand my research methods, and connect with peers who are equally passionate about shaping the future of children’s literature. The Summer School’s innovative approaches, such as participatory research and workshops, align perfectly with my goal of creating inclusive educational spaces that center community engagement and mental health advocacy.

While I’ve received this wonderful scholarship, I still need to cover costs such as travel, accommodations, and meals. Funding for international programs can be limited at my institution, Illinois State University, especially for summer schools. I’m applying for additional support from my department and external grants, but these sources may not be enough to cover the full expenses. That’s why I’m reaching out here, to friends, family, and kind-hearted supporters, hoping to bridge the gap and make sure I don’t miss out on this incredible learning experience.

Attending this Summer School isn’t just about academic enrichment, it’s about representation. As a Latinx/e scholar, I want to show young readers and future scholars that our stories and identities matter. My research focuses on how migration, generational trauma, and redefined concepts of home can empower youth who see themselves reflected in narratives that validate their experiences. By integrating digital tools and cognitive theories, I aspire to create a broader platform to discuss mental health, especially within communities that have historically been marginalized.

¡Hola, mundo!

Mi nombre es Edcel Javier Cintron-Gonzalez y estoy a punto de alcanzar una gran meta: me encuentro en mis últimos tres semestres para completar mi Doctorado (Ph.D.) en Estudios de Inglés, con énfasis en Literatura Infantil y Juvenil. Desde mis días como estudiante subgraduado en Puerto Rico, he soñado con convertirme en un investigador de Literatura Infantil que amplifica las voces y las identidades interseccionales de la comunidad latinx/e en obras para lectores jóvenes. Mi investigación se centra en cómo la literatura puede servir como un espacio transformativo para abordar temas de salud mental en comunidades latinx/e, derribando estigmas culturales.

Mi experiencia en el programa de doctorado ha sido sumamente enriquecedora tanto a nivel personal como académico. En el año 2023 publiqué mi primer cuadernillo de poesía titulado Irma, Maria, Fiona & Me, donde abordó mis experiencias al sobrevivir huracanes en el Caribe. En 2024 tuve la oportunidad de presentarme en TedxNormal, compartiendo mi charla sobre cómo procesar el trauma a través de la poesía y abogar por el apoyo antes y después de eventos catastróficos como los huracanes. Actualmente, mi investigación sobre la representación latinx/e fue finalista en la competencia Image of Research 2025, organizada por la Oficina de Investigación de la Universidad de Illinois State.

¡Estoy emocionado de anunciar que he sido aceptado en la Escuela de Verano de Literatura Infantil de la Universidad de Antwerp, en Bélgica, para el año 2025, y además me han otorgado una beca para asistir! Esta es una oportunidad invaluable para aprender de académicos reconocidos internacionalmente, expandir mis métodos de investigación y conectarse con colegas que comparten la misma pasión por moldear el futuro de la literatura infantil. El enfoque innovador de la Escuela de Verano—incluyendo la investigación participativa y diversos talleres—coincide perfectamente con mi objetivo de crear espacios educativos inclusivos que promuevan la participación comunitaria y el apoyo a la salud mental.

Aunque he recibido esta beca, aún debo cubrir gastos de viaje, alojamiento y comidas. La financiación para programas internacionales en mi institución, Illinois State University, es limitada, especialmente para escuelas de verano. Estoy solicitando ayuda a mi departamento y a becas externas, pero puede que no sea suficiente para cubrir todos los costos. Por eso recurro a ustedes—amigos, familiares y generosos colaboradores—con la esperanza de reducir la brecha económica y asegurar mi participación en esta experiencia académica tan importante.

Asistir a esta Escuela de Verano no es solo una meta académica, es una cuestión de representación. Como académico latinx/e, mi propósito es mostrar a los lectores jóvenes y a los futuros investigadores que nuestras historias e identidades importan. Mi trabajo se enfoca en cómo la migración, el trauma generacional y los conceptos redefinidos de “hogar” pueden empoderar a la juventud que se ve reflejada en narrativas que validan sus experiencias. Al integrar herramientas digitales y teorías cognitivas, aspiro a generar un diálogo más amplio sobre la salud mental, especialmente en comunidades que han sido históricamente marginadas.
