Help the Family Honor Vietnam Veteran Charlie Baker
Donation protected
Dear friends, family, and compassionate strangers,
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles "Charlie" Ernest Baker, a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran. Charlie, 80, passed away on March 31, 2025.
Charlie, a Vietnam Veteran, served his country honorably aboard the USS Forrestal CVA 59 during the Vietnam War.
Charlie was a man of quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and deep love for his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Pamela Sloan-Baker of Ladson, SC, and his stepson Matthew Abernathy, who happens to have Autism and is under the care of Miss Pamela. Pamela also is responsible for increasing extra expenses for her Mother who is in a retirement home for people with dementia.
Charlie also touched our lives in ways that words cannot fully express. Although we were not related by blood, he became an "adopted" grandfather my son Cash, (who
has Down Syndrome). Charlie formed a unique and heartfelt bond with Cash, offering him the kind of unconditional love, encouragement, and warmth that only a grandparent can provide. Seeing Charlie and Cash together was a gift to everyone around them—a testament to Charlie’s capacity to love deeply and wholeheartedly.
While Charlie’s family mourns the loss of a truly remarkable man, they face an unexpected financial burden as now they are not receiving any of Charlie's income. Additionally, Miss Pamela just discovered that Charlie did not have a valid life insurance policy, and they are not in a position to pay for funeral expenses. The VA will reimburse up to $978 for burial, but even this extra money is not something they have. In the meantime they have to find a way to cover all the bills to ensure they still have a roof over their head. As they navigate this difficult and uncertain time, we are asking for your help to honor Charlie’s memory and provide his family with the support they need.
Funds raised through this GoFundMe campaign will go directly toward covering Charlie’s funeral expenses and any additional funds will be used to support Pamela and Matthew as they adjust to life without Charlie.
Charlie touched the lives of so many people with his warmth, generosity, and dedication to his family and country. He was a loving husband to Pamela, a caring father and stepfather, and a proud grandfather to six grandchildren—and to my son Cash, who will forever hold Charlie’s love in his heart. His legacy is one of service, love, and devotion, and we hope to honor that legacy by ensuring he receives the dignified farewell he deserves.
Whether you knew Charlie personally or simply want to help a family in need during their most difficult hour, every contribution—big or small—will make a difference. If you are unable to donate, we ask that you share this campaign with others and keep Pamela, Matthew, and the rest of Charlie’s family in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for your kindness, compassion, and generosity. Together, we can help Pamela and Matthew honor Charlie’s memory and ensure that his family can focus on healing without the added stress of financial hardship.
We will post updates on funeral arrangements and provide additional information as it becomes available. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping us celebrate the life of Charles "Charlie" Ernest Baker.
With gratitude,
Kyla - a family friend.
