Hi, my name is Nadine White, an award-winning news journalist based in England.
I am independently raising funds to make a 60-minute documentary about 'Barrel Children', the underreported phenomenon of the Caribbean children separated from their parents between 1948 - early 1970s as they migrated to the UK during the Windrush era.
Can you help, please?
I'm passionate about exploring underreported stories, particularly Black ones because so many of our experiences haven't been documented by us. It's important that we bear witness.
Here's a short version that I produced here - platformed through The Independent - which I hope to now expand upon: https://www.independent.co.uk/tv/news/windrush-barrel-children-documentary-b2109396.html
Known as ‘Barrel Children’ - through the care packages of clothes, food and goods sent to them by their parents - this generation grew up disconnected from their families, some never seeing their parents again or later coming to the UK to find a strange new world that they didn’t always fit into.
This phenomenon often sparked a ripple effect of family separation and trauma as the diaspora fought to survive and thrive in post-war Britain.
My documentary will reckon with this complicated legacy through the testimonies of these children-now adults, hearing accounts from the parents who made the sacrifices for the greater good of their families - all too often at a high emotional cost.
Proceeds of this campaign will go towards filming, editing and legal fees. The finished version will be screened at UK venues.
I know we're in the middle of an economic crisis but I reckon there's no time like to present to undertake this important project. Please help if you can!
