In the last five years, we’ve been involved in a range of cat rescue projects. We’ve TNR’d street cats to make sure they are healthy but don’t contribute to overpopulation. We’ve helped get medical services for cats that belong to low-income families so pets and humans that love each other can stay together. And we’ve helped abandoned friendlies get healthy and find their forever homes.

And while there are services that help reduce the costs of this work and other rescuers that generously share what resources they can, the simple fact is, we’ve done 80% of this out of our own pockets including vet visits, transportation, food, medications, and other supplies. All without asking for donations.

But now we have two cats in serious medical need at the same time.

Goblin Princess Annie was rescued from the street as a pregnant kitten. She’s been spayed, received basic medical care, been socialized, and is now with a fantastic foster. But after she stopped eating, a vet visit revealed she has Grade 4 Periodontal Disease (that’s the most severe grade possible) and has lost some weight because eating hurts so much. Luckily, due to a cancellation we were able to schedule Annie’s dental surgery for tomorrow. Even with the rescue discount we’re deeply grateful for, today’s pre-surgery visit was $418 and the estimate for her surgical visit is over $1230.

Meanwhile, we have also just rescued Captain Chubby Cheeks, a friendly who has been struggling to survive outside for at least a year and has been too wary of humans to let us help him until recently. He will also need a general checkup and dental work before he can find his forever home. But there’s another wrinkle — he is also nearly blind and has obvious eye disease. We’re not sure yet if this needs to be treated or even can be treated, or if it’s just a condition he’ll continue to live with, but we know his costs will be at least as much as Annie’s. He has his first appointment on May 21.

We’re looking to raise $3500 to off-set the cost of Annie and Captain’s vet care, with the hope that the bills won’t be higher. Anything we raise over that money will go to fund the next case that we take on.
