Help Fund The Gen Z Web Series "Required Skills"

Hi! We’re the team behind Required Skills, a multi-part short-form comedy web series that will be cross-posted on major social media platforms. Our show follows a group of 20-somethings navigating life, the job market, and friendship in a post-grad world.

As the showrunner/creator, Maggie Borgen strives to showcase the (oftentimes outrageous) reality of being in your 20s in the 2020s. Maggie is a recent Film & Television graduate of Boston University, and her work aims to create film & television projects that spark dialogue about social issues – hence this show!

Created by 20-somethings, for 20-somethings, Required Skills meets Gen Z where they’re at – online.

THE WHY
Required Skills is a product of the times. Gen Z – specifically those of us in our twenties – faces unprecedented rates of unemployment and underemployment, and it’s impacting our lives in ways that feel deeply isolating. This vertical web series seeks to be accessible to a generation that lives on their phone, comforting to those who’ve yet to find their career, and hilarious to those of us who just really need to have a good laugh. Following in the footsteps of shows like Arrested Development, People of Earth, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Community, we hope you’ll follow along, and support us on the way!

THE STORY
Six twenty-somethings meet each other through a “support group” for recent college grads who are unemployed but soon find the need for community with each other is larger than just the jobs they’re trying to find.

Meet SLOANE, The "Linked In Warrior" who organizes the meet-ups. She’s looking for a job in marketing, networking to the max. Despite applying to countless jobs and tracking them all in a spreadsheet, she’s still searching. To help herself and others, she sends out an invite, meeting…

TRUCE – The “Back in My Day” Reminscer. He misses the community of college and joins the support group seeking friendship and camaraderie.

KAYLA is a certified Soul Searcher. After some tough grad school rejections, she’s searching for her next move. Trying to figure out what she really wants from life, she is that friend who just got back from a Eurotrip. Her new life outside of the hustle and bustle is causing all sorts of existentialism.

COOPER is a Side Hustler. After a health scare last summer, she wasn’t able to get an offer based on an internship. Now, she’s looking for work while doing DoorDash, Depop, and various other odd jobs.

MASON is The Oblivious Film Bro. His artistic specialty is creating student/indie films with famous titles of “film bro” movies – yet, he claims to not know any of them. It’s honestly unclear if he really doesn’t know or if it’s just one really long bit.

And GEMMA, Required Skills’ very own STEM Queen. The company she interned at downsized, so she wasn’t hired back. Now, she’s looking for research positions and side jobs. Feeling like she’s back to square one, fears of inadequacy plague her, especially in the face of unemployment.

PRODUCTION TEAM
Our cast and crew includes 30+ people, who are working on the production in-person and remotely. You can watch testimonials in the video above as well.

MAGGIE BORGEN: "I'm incredibly excited to work with the team on bringing this web series to life! We want to create a show about post-grad by people who are currently experiencing just that. We hope the web series will help other 20-somethings know that they are not alone in the unique transition from college to full-blown adulthood."

TRINITY BEASLEY: "As the Social Media Manager and Graphic Designer for this project, I’m excited to see how my work in post-production and social content will fit into the bigger series. I’m also really looking forward to jumping into pre-production and production, getting to experience and capture the full process of bringing the show to life. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together!"

GABRIELLA ARICA: “I’m Gabriella, one of the Production Designers on Required Skills and I joined the project because as a recent college grad, the scripts really spoke to the struggles I’ve been facing regarding the job search. Although each character in Required Skills has a different outlook on life and approach to job searching, I am super intrigued to see how they will interact with each other and build a community to overcome unemployment.”

HELP US BRING THIS STORY TO LIFE
Now, here’s where you can help!

Our funding will be utilized to ensure that we can begin and remain consistent with production throughout our first six episodes. We are a fully independent production and we intend to continue with more episodes in the near future. This funding will cover production costs such as location rentals, craft services, and wardrobe/props. By donating, you are helping us launch a series we hope to continue to create beyond the first six episodes.
