Good evening, friends, neighbors, and supporters of the arts.
Tonight we gather to honor a man whose quiet dedication changed lives far beyond our valley. From modest beginnings in Arnold Street, Mountain Ash Philip Burton nurtured talent, discipline, and belief in what young people from this community could become. His influence helped shape one of Wales’ most celebrated voices, Richard Burton, placing our town firmly on the cultural map.
The recent film Mr. Burton has shone a fresh light on this remarkable legacy, reminding audiences everywhere that greatness often begins in ordinary streets, guided by extraordinary mentors. For our community, this story is not distant history — it is part of who we are.
This evening, we aim to raise £350 for the purchase and erection of a blue plaque at Philip Burton’s boyhood home. It is a modest sum for a lasting tribute — a marker that will tell future generations that from this place, inspiration took root and changed lives.
In celebrating Philip Burton, we celebrate the enduring spirit of our town and of Wales itself — resilient, creative, and full of possibility.
Thank you for helping us make that tribute a reality.
