Hello and Welcome!
Our website, https://www.bipocyogisottawa.ca/ , was created to raise awareness of Ottawa yogis who identify as Black persons, Indigenous Peoples or Persons of Colour (BIPOC), and the varying sense of belonging felt by these yogis in mainstream yoga studios and yoga-related businesses. The initiative was launched in the Summer of 2020 by Kethy Sosso-Kolle and Stéphane Ippersiel, two Ottawa-based yoga teachers. The hope is that BIPOC who may be thinking of taking up yoga (or any other wellness modality) will see themselves in these images and stories, and feel encouraged to start on their own path to wellness.
Here, we are raising funds to support one BIPOC yogi living in the Ottawa-Gatineau region in their journey to becoming a Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) at a recognized Canadian institution/organization of their choice. The cost of a YTT typically ranges between $3,000 and $4,000 per student, which is hard to come by for most. We hope to raise enough money to cover at least half of their registration cost (up to $1,500 per scholarship).
A call for applications will be sent out soon, and an applicant will be selected. Details on how to apply will be posted on our website, Instagram and Facebook pages.
Donate and help us increase the number of BIPOC yoga teachers in Canada !
If we succeed in raising more than $1,500, the rest of the funds will be donated to a 2nd BIPOC yogi, to assist with their journey towards becoming a teacher. And so on, and so forth.
Every cent raised/received will be paid directly to the lucky yogi's YTT institution of choice. The yogi must be pre-registered for the YTT and we will pay the YTT institution directly by electronic fund transfer (direct deposit). The funds cannot be withdrawn by the BIPOC teacher at a later date (non-refundable).
