Full Circle Food Bank Fundraiser
Donativo protegido
This is a story no one knows about me and I am going to share it now. My hope is that people will take a few minutes to read this and then reach into their hearts to help if they can.
5 years ago when my daughter was only 3, it was a time in my family’s life when we were struggling, having a really really tough time making ends meet.
We had a simple home which we were grateful for but the cost of paying all the bills, the phone, heat, water, hydro etc was to the point of shut off notices flooding our mailbox. My husband and I were both working but it just wasn’t enough.
At the end of the month after paying all the minimums on the bills and necessities for my daughter it got to a point one month that there was just no money left for groceries and the cupboards were getting bare. It was that day, I will never forget that I had my first thought in adulthood of turning to a food bank. I remembered food stamps as a kid and Salvation Army boxes being delivered to our porch but I never thought I would be walking into a food bank as an adult with my own daughter.
I cried at first but then wiped the tears, stood tall, got my daughter ready and went to Simcoe Hall Settlement House in Oshawa.
It was a very humbling experience.
Standing in that line, waiting to register and seeing all those other families around me waiting for their food boxes. I felt sad, not for me but for them. Those children who probably thought that was the grocery store. I had such mixed emotions. I was disheartened, but, also so incredibly grateful that this food bank existed for them, and for my family. What an AMAZING place it was and how it helped people in need. I smiled.
I knew in my heart, and told myself that afternoon while I collected my food box that one day I would come back and donate food to pay back my food box and do as much as I can to collect and donate food for people who need it.
Fast forward to now 5 yrs later and it is time.
I didn’t win the lottery, not the financial one anyway, but I won the lottery of ABUNDANCE in friendship and in incredible community. Having witnessed over and over again people coming together in times of need and helping each other it is THIS that makes me feel SO abundant in so many ways.
I knew it was time because I heard a story this week, actually several stories from different people as if they were messages to remind me of my time of severe struggle. Stories of families in need, right here in my community living within blocks of my own home. Needing food, needing socks and winter boats. I will not share all the details just know that basic necessities are needed.
So this is why I am doing this. I am asking my personal friends, businesses, networking friends, family, to please donate if you can, and to share this Fundraiser on all your social media platforms so we can reach our goal of $1111 to buy food for the food bank in Durham Region. If we can surpass that number, how amazing it would be too!
I will be going food shopping with my daughter and any other families who want to join us, and delivering the food to the food bank.
I am starting off this fundraiser with a donation of $134.00. It may seem like a strange amount to just pick randomly, but it was far from random.
1 year ago this month I met a very special man, Dr Tom Hill who taught me so much in just a few short hours. His impact on me was life changing. His theory is you can change your life around, a life, in 18 months if you have the will to do it. He handed me a $100 USD bill and asked me change someone’s else life in the next 18 months with that bill. I have held on to it folded up in my wallet everyday since he handed it to me just waiting for that one person to give it to that will impact their life.
Today I realized that this $100. USD doesn’t have to help just 1 person, it can help dozens of people, maybe hundreds. By starting this fundraiser and bringing awareness to my community, and people sharing it across their reach, not only will donations help buy food now BUT it will bring awareness and reminders to so many who see this and it can light the way for others to start their own fundraisers in their communities to help their local food banks. I am giddy and smiling at this thought as I finish my story and ask you for your help with reaching our goal by donating or sharing, or BOTH !
Much love!
Sincerely
