Fuel Sumaiya's Fight Against Hemophilia A
Donation protected
My name is Sumaiya Dickens and I am a rising senior at Emory University! I am studying Biology and will also receive an engineering degree from Georgia Tech upon completion of my dual degree program.
Currently, I am working as a researcher at the Emory University School of Medicine, aiming to make a difference in the lives of people affected by Hemophilia A. This year, I am embarking on a critical research project to explore why some patients are resistant to the treatment for this blood disorder.
Unfortunately, my lab is facing financial struggles, making it challenging to continue this important work. Obtaining grants has proven unsuccessful in the areas of staff support. Despite the constraints, my intention is to make a way somehow.
In a field where only 1.6% of black women are represented, opportunities like this are life-changing and often out of reach for us. This hands-on experience and access to a network will expand the realm of possibility not only for myself but also for anyone that will follow in my footsteps.
Despite my initial discomfort about asking for support, I have come to recognize that I have a responsibility to not only work hard but also to advocate for the success of the work that I have dedicated myself to.
Your support will allow me to cover costs related to me being able to complete this project. Your belief in my journey will strengthen my footing as I devote my entire summer to improving outcomes for people living with Hemophilia A.
Your donations, no matter the amount, will serve as affirmation that I am walking in my purpose as a future biomedical engineer who will make a difference. I have dreamt about being a scientist since I was four years old.
Thank you in advance to anyone who sees this coming to fruition right alongside me!
