Spotlight on Our Elders: Why Your Support Matters

As we prepare to bring SanArte workshops to Puerto Rico and California this fall, I want to share someone who’s been a quiet muse behind ElevArte—my aunt.

She lives in Puerto Rico and has always had a performer’s heart. She never got the chance to pursue it professionally, but that didn’t dim her light. Even now, in the early stages of dementia, she lights up when telling a story. And if there’s a camera nearby? She’s already striking a pose.

Your support is making it possible to create a space where she—and elders like her—can play, perform, pretend, and most importantly, stay connected. Our weekly workshops aren’t just about art; they’re about keeping the spirit—and mind—alive.

Studies have shown that creative engagement helps improve mood, memory, and cognitive function in older adults—especially when performance and social connection are involved. This work is about joy, dignity, and mental vitality.
