Empower High School Journalists in Tulsa
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Lonnie Isabel, New York journalist and journalist professor, now living in Oklahoma. I am raising money a summer program for high school journalists in Tulsa.
Thanks to some great local partners in the National Association of Journalists' Tulsa Chapter, Tulsa Community College and with a small grant from the Dow Jones Fund, my dream of a program is now happening.
What I am asking for is support for the students. The teachers are all volunteers, as am I. We need money for transportation to news events, for supplies and an honorarium we would like to give each student completing the program.
We are reporting on health issues affecting younger people here in Tulsa, including depression. We have lined up a list of guests to talk with the student journalists. We will produce multimedia stories and podcasts and teach students the value of research and finding out the truth. We hope to inspire youth with the power of reporting.
Journalism has been my life, and now in my retirement, I want to show that spark to other kids, who like I did, may feel left out and forgotten in the national dialogue and in the local news.
