Crysstal and I have been in rescue since 2017 when we first rescued 3 puppies left out in the coldest weather of the year. Since then, working with TLC Pet Rescue and Freedom Bridge Animal rescue, we have fostered and transported over 200 dogs and cats. Last year started rescuing cats! Now, a year and a half later, we have rescued over 50 cats, spayed and neutered over 100 local strays to prevent unwanted kittens, and have incorporated our rescue as Axanar Animal Rescue!.
Currently, we work with both PetSense and Pet Supplies Plus, who host our adoptable cats at their Athens area stores. Since last year we have adopted out over 50 cats, and we expect to hit 100 by year's end.
WHAT WE NEED MONEY FOR:
Every cat we adopt out we spend about $200 on. Spay/neuter and rabies vaccine comes to $100. We vaccinate the cats ourselves and the cost of the vaccines is $10. A microchip costs $5. Food/litter and vet visits account for the rest. We charge a $125 adoption fee. So we lose money on every cat we take in.
Now, sometimes we get lucky and get to rehome cats that are already spayed/neutered and we make money on those cats as we dont have the expenses to pay for but still get the adoption fee.
Kittens are a whole other issue. We get them usually around 4 weeks and they won't go to a new home until they are big enough to be spayed/neutered which is around 12 weeks. Kittens need to be de-wormed and usually get sick one way or another and have to go to the vet. A vet visit is usually $60 plus medicine.
We are still paying off an $8,000 vet bill for Penny, a beautiful and sweet Shar-pei/Lab mix who finally got adopted by an AMAZING adopter in Macon, who now helps out with our rescue. But this bill is being paid off monthly.
We get food and litter from a rescue food bank and each month we save several hundred dollars by buying cat food and litter in bulk. We just bought a whole pallet of top notch cat litter, which would have cost over $1,500 at Wal Mart and we got it for $115! None the less, we still spend about $400 a month on food and litter.
We TNR (trap, neuter, release) cats for local residents in Gwinnett and Walton counties and while we often get the services for free, we still have to pay for gas and food for the volunteers who spend a lot of time helping.
We also donate food to a community cat caretaker who manages three different cat colonies.
OUR TEAM:
Axanar Animal rescue now has a team of 4 volunteers who all contribute to our ability to save animals. We currently are fostering 21 kittens between ourselves, and our four fosters Adriana, Emily, Angela, Katie and Quest. Add to that Crysstal who helps run the Rescue and , Dale Simpson, who is always there for us to do anything needed.
We also have been blessed with two awesome donors who have helped at critical times, Dave Lanyon and Gudni Gudnason. These two funded finishing the Axanar film project and are also animal lovers. Gudni lives in Japan and helps local cat rescues in Tokyo and Dave Lanyon is a truly generous soul who has set up programs to provide free dental care for Toronto's homeless population.
